So, my prediction turned out to be about as wrong as it could be. I knew better. I really did. But I didn’t listen to myself. The defense practically always wins in these situations. Peyton Manning has a history of trainwrecks in the playoffs.* Denver has quite the history of failing spectacularly in the Super Bowl. Why did I not listen to the rational part of my brain? *Granted, it’s not always his fault, but things just happen. Look, this isn’t going to be long. For one, there isn’t a whole lot to write about. Last night was a terrible football game. It was fairly clear from the very first snap that the Broncos were not going to be bringing their A game. Sure, they only spotted the Seahawks five points to start, but it did not take long to figure out that Seattle’s defense had Peyton on lockdown. They only managed eleven yards or something like that in the entire first quarter. Those aren’t the sort of games you come back in. Especially when your defense looks like it wandered in off a high school field. Secondly, I spent most of the game feeling terrible. I still don’t feel very good, but I am at work. I’m regretting that decision at the moment, though. What more is there to say, really? Seattle was clearly the better team, at least on the night it mattered. Russell Wilson is off to a hell of a start in his career, and good for him. I have no qualms with him. I don’t care for Pete Carroll, but he does win football games. I also don’t much care for Seattle’s defense thanks to a bit of a PED problem. In any case, though, both units thoroughly outplayed Denver. The only real drama in the game was if it was going to reach “worst blowout ever” status or if Seattle could finally pitch the Super Bowl’s first shutout. It should be noted, as poorly as Denver played as a whole, that they actually did a pretty decent job of shutting down Marshawn Lynch. Going into the game, that seemed like a huge key for the Broncos to winning this game. Now, granted, as it turned out, Manning and company only managed eight points, which isn’t going to win many games. Especially not a championship game. But Denver’s pass defense was so porous and, well, just plain poor, it didn’t matter. I hope all the people that said that Russell Wilson was just an average quarterback with an elite defense were watching closely. But, hey, the Diamondbacks are having their pitchers and catchers report on Thursday, and the Olympics start that night, so that’s something to look forward to, right? Comments are closed.
